Next to every mobile number there is a question: does that number take texts? The answer starts as Not checked, and that is deliberately different from No.

The three answers
- Yes — somebody established it takes texts.
- No — somebody established it does not. A landline, or a switchboard.
- Not checked — nobody has established either way.
Why “Not checked” is not the same as “No”
An unchecked number still gets tried, because trying might work and not trying guarantees silence. We record what actually happened, so a failure is visible rather than silent.
Marking a number No stops it ever being texted. That is the right answer for a landline and the wrong one for a mobile nobody has got round to checking — so only choose it when you know.
