Why you can rename a machine but not change its serial or VIN

A machine has two names. The nickname is what the yard calls it, and you can change it whenever it stops fitting. The serial or VIN is fixed once it is recorded.

Why the serial is fixed

It is the machine’s legal identity. A title, a lien and an insurance claim all point at it. If it could be edited like a label, the record of which machine was on which job would quietly stop matching the paperwork.

If a serial was typed wrongly

That is a correction we make for you rather than an edit you make yourself, so the change leaves a record of what it used to be. Raise a ticket with the machine and the correct serial.

What else is shown but not editable

The same screen shows the machine’s class and its home yard as facts. Changing a class changes what the machine can stand in for and what has to be recorded before it can be rented; moving a machine to another yard is a transfer, which has to check what is already booked against it. Both are separate operations rather than edits.
